Whisper in the Waves is a captivating mystery that blends family saga, historical fiction, and a murder investigation into a compelling story spanning two centuries. At its heart is a bitter feud between two whaling families, reminiscent of the legendary Hatfield and McCoy rivalry. The author skillfully weaves together generations of resentment, betrayal, and violence that continues to shape the lives of descendants long after the original conflict began.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. The author skillfully reveals how old grudges and long-buried secrets can echo across generations.

This book is a great choice for readers who enjoy historical mysteries, family sagas, and stories where the past and present collide. Highly recommended.

The murder mystery novel Whisper in the Waves: Murder in Plymouth Harbor by Dianne Hunt Smith unravels a multi-family secret decades in the making. Taking place in the coastal town of Plymouth, Massachusetts, readers follow photographer Kat MacIntyre after she stumbles upon the murder scene of one of the town's most well-known whale watcher guides, Will Clarke. With the help of her cuddleable dog companion, Dash, and her ghostly spirit guide, Mac, Kat starts to piece together what happened to Will and hold the killer accountable. What she never prepared for, however, was just how long the making of the murder had been going on for.

Despite having no relationship to the deceased, Kat cannot stop thinking about who killed him and why. Deciding that she needs to do something to help solve the mystery, she commits to dedicating all her time and energy to catching the killer. Through her connection to the “other side”, Kat is capable of getting information that she would otherwise not have access to, which makes it a little complicated when explaining how she is coming up with evidence to the detective on the case, Ian Miller. Trusting Kat’s judgement and honest intentions, Ian pieces together her findings along with his own in order to discover that the man responsible for this horrible act is none other than Jonathan Woodworth, fellow boatman.

At first, there seems to be no obvious connection between Jonathan and Will, other than the fact that they both operate whale watching expeditions. After looking further into the situation, however, Kat discovers a family feud spanning back two hundred years where Will’s ancestor is responsible for the death of Jonathan’s ancestor. From there it is obvious: Will’s death was revenge hundreds of years in the making. Unfortunately, before he could be caught and charged, Jonathan commits suicide, ultimately bringing an end to the hostile family fight for good.

Whisper in the Waves; Murder in Plymouth Harbor is a perfect quick-read mystery novel for anyone looking to dive into a thriller. With characters worth rooting for, and a setting as pretty as a coastal town, Dianne Hunt Smith writes a captivating novel that you just don’t want to put down.    ~James J.
